It Isn't So ...

Unfortunately I wasn't "blessed" with 20/20 vision.  I hit the age of 4th grade (roughly 9 years old) and I found out I needed to wear glasses as my ability to see things in the distance (at 20 feet) was not perfect anymore.  I was sort of excited back then to be able to wear glasses but the excitement quickly dissipated.  Glasses and braces made for a very "unattractive" combination.  Then throw in acne as I hit puberty and well, I just wanted to dig a hole in the ground and climb in.

I was so excited when my parents agreed to let me wear contacts.  I think it was about the time my braces came off my teeth. So almost all was good in the world, until the acne drug Accutane was approved by the FDA - then life was really good, I felt actually good about myself for the first time in my life.  I actually thought I was "pretty" finally.

I noticed over the last year or so that my eyes felt "weird" and I was starting to get headaches more often.  I noticed I was squinting more when reading.  Then about a month ago I attempted to read the fine print on my watch and I couldn't.  All I could think was "this can't be happening already"!  There is no way that I need to wear reading glasses.  I am still young because I have an almost 6 year old and a 3 1/2 year old.  No, no, no I am not getting old, no way, no how.

My stash of contacts were running out so I needed to make an appointment with the optometrist to get more.  Plus my eye glasses were scratching, the anti-reflection coating was wearing off.  So I made the appointment.  Fortunately my distance isn't getting worse but when I mentioned my issue with reading the fine print on my watch he said lets check that out.  So he did and it turns out I need bi-focal lenses in my "glasses" and reading glasses with my contacts.  He told me to be happy that I made it to 40-cough-5 before needing them.  Most people my age have been wearing them for 5 years already.  Not sure that is all comforting to me, but I guess it will have to do.

On the plus side, I finally went "eye-glass" shopping and I found the cutest pair of frames.  I seriously, found the pair I wanted and they actually looked good on me.  Never works that I pick up a pair of frames that are the "IT" frames on the first try.  No other frames came close, so after 5 minutes of looking I was happy to just purchase my first pick and choice frames.  The good news is they didn't break the bank either.  I hate that I have such a strong prescription and now needing bi-focals it takes 10 business days to get the glasses.  Even at those "glasses in an hour while you wait" places - I never am able to get glasses in an hour.

So I guess I have to admit to myself that I am embarking upon "middle age".  I guess I'll have to start saving up money for face lifts, breast implants, a personal trainer and that red Mercedes convertible.  Oh yeah, and college tuition for my two kiddies!

  1. Egh. Let the kids pay their own way! ; )

I'm wel on my way to needing reading glasses too. The optometrist basically said I was up to me when to start and handed over the prescription. So far I can still reach far enough away to still see the type on the page...
