Weekend Projects! ... HGTV style!

I have a bad habit of wanting to complete home improvement projects right before we have overnight "guests" at my house.  On Friday, my mother and father in-law will be visiting for the weekend and sure as you know it I had a bee in my bonnet about two rooms that needed a facelift ASAP!

I'm a bit "thrifty" when I do home improvement projects.  I try to maximize what I get from our spending money!  This time, no different.  My first plan of attack was our laundry room / mud room.  This room has been the thorn in my side since I don't know how long!  It is one of the smallest rooms in our house but manages to carry the biggest "clutter" and always seems "dirty" both in clutter and in actual dirt.  Understandably so because it is the door that comes in from the garage.  I can't tell you how many times I have tripped over shoes and coats that land on the floor.  The washer and drier, I rarely ever get to see the tops of them because they are the catch-bins for everything. So it desperately needed some help!  We picked out "paint colors" at Home Depot.  Yes, I did say "colors" because I wanted the main wall to be dark (brown preferably) to hide all the shoe marks, etc., but the rest of the room needed to be a "lighter" color so it didn't dwarf the room any more than it already is physically.  We were hoping to find "shoe" bins so we can just put the shoes in them but were unable to find any at HomeDepot, but instead, we found a "bench" with some pretty cool storage space that would work perfectly in the spot and would be more accessible for the kids to use!  We, of course, purchased it!  Since coats seem to be a huge issue and often land on the ottomans in my family room, we decided to purchase matching hooks, one for the kids and one for the adults.  This way the kids can hang up their own coats!  With a couple of extra "bins" the room was transformed from a totally disgusting room (was too embarrassed to take before pictures) to a wonderfully organized and actually beautiful room.  One that I find myself walking in and out of often, just because I can! And because I like to admire my work!

When I say this room was disgusting before getting a facelift, I can tell you that underneath and behind the washer and drier were 5 years of Zoey (black lab) dog fur.  I'm sure there still is more and won't be retrieved until the washer and drier are removed.  I say to Zoey girl, you've made it so very difficult to ever forget you!  I miss you and love you very much!  Hope you're having fun romping around in heaven!

Since our powder room was painted 4 1/2 years ago, with miscellaneous leftover paint and I was getting sick of the way it looked, I took the remaining paint from the laundry room and redid the powder room!  Purchased some new shelves and towel hooks and added my daughter's artwork and I now have a very well put together powder room that I'm finally happy with!
