Yellow Balloon ...

My son has a favorite color.  It has been his favorite color his whole entire almost 3 year old life.  The color is yellow!  Yellow was one of the first words he ever said too.  Pretty crazy!

If I could buy him a Woody/Buzz (Toy Story) shirt in yellow, his life would be complete.  He would need nothing else to fulfill his life long dreams and ambitions!  (This all coming from an almost 3 year old's point of view.)

Yesterday I dragged my kids to Church with me.  I usually take my daughter but my son wanted to go too.  He doesn't behave really well in Church so its often better to have him stay behind with his Dad.  Nap time often falls during Saturday late afternoon/evening Masses.  That is the other reason why I tend to leave my son behind.  I like to go on Saturday so I have someone to go to Church with, my parents prefer Saturday over Sunday, so if I want to go with them I go on Saturdays.  My son is at the age that he thinks naps are overrated.  Getting him to take one is often so difficult that I rather not fight with him and then just let him go to bed early.  He will though, fall asleep in the car instantly if he's really tired.  Yesterday, we decided to go run an errand after Church and before dinner.  We got stopped by a train so we had to take a "longer" route to where we were going.  I turn around, he was out cold.  We ran our errand and then decided to go get some food for dinner at Red Robin.  My son was still passed out and we had to carry him into the restaurant.  My husband carried him and sat him in the booth seat next to him and my son briefly woke up and then laid his head on the table and passed out again.  We ordered food and drinks and still the child was still sleeping.  So my husband went and got my kids balloons from the hostess, the yellow balloon finally managed to wake him up.

Of course the yellow balloon had to come home with us and go with us on our family walk.  The kids went in the wagon and my husband pulled them around as we walked through the development for a two plus mile walk.  We were about 10 minutes from home when I hear "oh no the balloon".  My son had let go of the ribbon on the end of the balloon and up to the sky the yellow balloon went.  It floated away ever so slowly.  The whole time the four of us were looking up at it feeling bad that this balloon was out of reach and floating away.  In an effort to avoid a complete meltdown, my Jewish husband told my son, that the balloon was floating to Heaven to be with Jesus.  That seemed to satisfy him.  We all pitifully waved goodbye to this yellow balloon and wished it well on its journey to Heaven.  Meanwhile, I'm secretly hoping the balloon doesn't pop right over our back yard with the contents landing in my back yard.  How was I ever going to explain to my son and daughter why the balloon was deflated and lying in our backyard when my husband told them it was going up to Heaven.

After we got home, my sweet 5 year old daughter told my son that he could have her blue balloon to replace the yellow that floated away.  Now that was a proud moment for me!  Here my daughter learned the best lesson in life, to share.  But not only to share, but to share something she really wanted without me asking her to.  She shared it with her brother because she wanted to share it - I didn't even have to make that suggestion to her!

That yellow balloon will always be special because it helped me see how "good" my kids really are!
