Those of us who got up at the crack of dawn got to witness a marriage between a real-life prince and his commoner fiance, who became an elegant princess* with just one (in this case two) simple kiss!
That's how my daughter will remember it. It didn't matter that William and Kate repeated wedding vows with billions of people watching and the Arch Bishop of Canterbury officiating, Kate became a princess just by merely kissing William! I'm now wondering if I tell my daughter that - if she kissed any boy she was married to him for life - maybe it would make her think twice before giving up that "first kiss" to just anyone!
I didn't watch the whole ceremony - I missed the procession into the church and caught a few things after the ceremony had ended and the procession out and to the palace. Having to get my daughter ready for school and kids dressed and fed, I missed a lot of the pomp and circumstance and media chatter. But I did make sure that I planted my silly little self down in front of the T.V. to witness the "famed" kiss and the transformation of Kate into a Princess*!
As much as there was so much media hype over this wedding, and many people were sick to death of hearing about it - it was so nice to witness. What a neat thing to be a part of, even if it was just as a spectator from far far away! Life can be grueling, boring, sad and stressful sometimes - so I think that having something like this to wrap your "proverbial" arms around was a nice diversion from the mundane life we often lead. Which is why little girls fawn over "fictional" princesses and dream wonderful dreams of marrying a prince some day. This moment for my child wasn't about watching a fictional cartoon character getting married - it was REAL!
My Norah asked me today, "Mom did you have a magical wedding like this?" Don't you wish you married a "prince"? I said, I didn't get married in an Abbey, but I did get married in a beautiful Church - although the Church may have been simple looking, it was beautiful because it had all my family and friends there to witness my wedding day. Was the day "magical"? Probably not magical in the way my daughter would think is magical today - it was a hot late August morning filled with extreme humidity and a torrential down-pour of rain hit after the ceremony and during "picture taking time". But it was magical because I married my best friend ever! About the prince part, I was shocked that she didn't view her daddy as a prince - but then again daddy doesn't wear "prince like clothing" like Prince William was wearing today. Instead, he wore a nice black tux and was my handsome prince on our wedding day - and still is my "Handsome Prince" today. And he does make me feel like a Princess on most days!
I'm glad my daughter got to see a real live Prince and Princess wedding. It's something she'll hopefully remember for the rest of her life. I will, because I was watching it with her!
*Actually Kate is not a princess but the Duchess of Cambridge.
