The Age of Stuttering

It just happened overnight ... my son is stuttering horribly.  He went from talking perfectly two days ago to stuttering.  Its so painful to listen to him talk now.  I know what's happening, his brain is processing faster than his mouth will allow him to.  In talking to my son's preschool administrator today, I asked if he thought it was normal that my son was stuttering so badly already?  He said it starts around this age and can last until 4 and boys tend to stutter more so than the girls.  He said what I already knew, "have him look at me when he speaks and don't make a big deal out of the stuttering, by making a big deal out of it, he'll stutter even more!"

Normally I'd worry about  this but the same thing happened with my daughter.  She spoke perfectly and then "BAM" overnight she started stuttering terribly around the same age, 2 1/2.  After a couple of months (it may have been weeks, but it seemed like forever to me) and she went back to her normal speech pattern.

Fortunately, my son will be starting back up in pre-school April 5th, so we can get a "teacher's" assessment of his speech and he will also be evaluated by our city pre-school psychologist on April 4th as a formality to transition from the county program "Help Me Grow" to preschool.  We don't anticipate any problems but it would be good to have a "professional" take a listen to his stuttering to make sure that its okay to not really worried too much about it.

My husband stutters too.  I notice when he is excessively busy or "excited" about something he tends to stutter a bit.  I'm going to go out on a limb and say that its a sign of "extreme intelligence"!

I'll be honest, I hate the stuttering phase ... its so painful for me to listen to this and it gives me a headache.  Not to mention, I just want to grab the words out of his mouth just to make it stop.  I know that sound horrible, but I'm just being honest.

God, grant me patience today.  I am grateful that he speaks though!
