Are you sure you are a Qualified Doctor?

One thing that I'm starting to believe is that I'm more qualified to manage my child's medical care than most doctors.  I seem to know a lot more about his "body" and his "syndrome" than most doctors that have spent years in medical school, residency, fellowships, etc.

My son has been fighting a doozy of a sinus infection/ear infection over the last several days.  Saturday night he spiked a fever of 106F.  Yesterday night his fever broke causing him to look like he was in a pool of water - he was literally soaking wet from head to toe.  He was extremely cold and clammy and we ended up taking his temperature because he was acting all weird again, much like he did with a temperature of 106F.  His temperature read 95F.  We waited a bit after changing his clothes and attempted to warm him up and it was 95F.  We called the nurse on call and she had never heard of that happening, so she had to call the doctor on call.  He said if it dipped anymore we needed to get him to the ER.  So we checked his temperature and it wasn't budging.  Donovan wanted to go back to bed so we put him back in bed and went to check on him several times.  One of the times I went in and he was soaking wet again from head to toe.  We then checked his temperature and it was 94.5F.  Not good.  Jon went and got a rectal thermometer since we didn't have a working one and sure as you know it the rectal confirmed the 94.5F.

So for a second time in two nights we had to drop poor Norah off at my parents and take Donovan to the ER.  The wait appeared to be long, however, the admittance person told us to go to the window and let the nurse know what is going on.  All Jon had to say was his temperature is 94.5F and he has a heart condition and we got bumped to the top of the line.  In we went, they confirmed that his temperature was low although warmer at 96.1F.

They put us in a room we wait for the doctor.  Quite a few minutes later, he comes in speaks very poor English and tells us that he probably has a virus because of the fever.  WHAT???  He doesn't have a fever anymore the kid is border line hypothermic.  We must have told this doctor 3x that my child doesn't have a fever but has gone the other way.  He checks his ears says the antibiotic must be working as they are looking better, not healed but looking better.  But continues to say that the runny nose is probably a virus.

I wanted to shake this man, or better yet kick him in the butt and send him on his way.  My child's fever broke, he's on an antibiotic, we want you to tell us why he's heading down the road of hypothermia and what do we need to do about it?  My child has a whole host of medical conditions, including a heart issue so we need to normalize his body temperature. HELLO!

Then he leaves comes back says the nurse will take his temperature and if its close to normal we can go home.  Fortunately it read 98.1F via the forehead wand and they sent us home.  WHAT A WASTE OF A SLEEPLESS NIGHT!  I could have done all of that myself. Yet, we still don't know what we should be doing with our son if such a thing were to happen to him again.

Good Grief!
